Mugu, in Western Nepal, is one of the least developed regions in Nepal. According to the 2011 Nepal Census, 90% of women in Mugu are illiterate, and the situation has not changed since. Sunakali shows Mugu’s women’s soccer team and its journey to the national championship, and how the dreams of these girls become true.
Winner of the Audience Thinking Award in 2016, the film’s protagonist, Sunakali, accompanied by the film’s director, visited us in 2017 to collect her award. As a curious anecdote, it was then that he met the sea for the first time at the hands of the red-and-white footballer Óscar de Marcos and the Fundazioa team.
