Campos

20 November / 18:00

‘Campos’ is a journey through rural Spain, exploring the stories and dialogues of the people who live there and their relationship with their environment and landscape. Like the square and the church, the football field is a key element of the rural architectural landscape. Its location is often found on a threshing floor, on a municipal estate, next to mining wells, or on a plot of cattle pasture. No football field in one village is the same as in another. Its diverse and heterogeneous appearance reflects the cultural characteristics of the territory, the geographical area in which it is located, and the idiosyncrasy of its inhabitants.
In the so-called “Empty Spain,” these abandoned playgrounds serve as a tangible measure of depopulation.

The directors, Óscar Falagán and David Casado, use the football fields as a setting and framework to convey the stories of the residents who live in these places. Some of these inhabitants were linked to the football teams of their towns, while others are simply connected to the place itself. Through their relationship with football, their village, or their fellow countrymen, they highlight several issues related to depopulation and demonstrate the value of rural football as an element of unity, cohesion, social engagement, and leisure.
